Judy Becker Worsley
J.D., D.Ac. (U.K.), Acupuncture Physician (FL)
Acupuncture had already caught my attention in 1972 while in my final year of law school. I was certain law would not be my career. Intrigued and determined to study, I searched for a teacher and received a compelling recommendation from Dr. Marcy Goldstein, a surgeon in St. Louis, Missouri who, after attending a short seminar with Professor J.R. Worsley at California’s Esalen Institute, was about to go to England to further his studies with J.R.
Convinced of the possibility of living an ordinary life in an extraordinary way, I travelled to Oxford, England in the spring of 1973 to begin the second USA Intensive Program in a system of medicine I had never experienced, with a teacher I had never met, recommended by a man I only knew from moments on the telephone! However, within minutes of meeting J.R., I knew that destiny had led me to this magical meeting.
Studying with J.R. blended revelations with great personal challenges and extraordinary fun. Between 1973 and 1983 I received my Licentiate, Bachelor, Master and Doctorate Certifications. Under his direction, I practised, taught and supervised at the College of Traditional Acupuncture (CTA) until we both left in 1995.
In the late 1970’s J.R. started Teacher Training, which I, along with an excellent team continue to this day. The purpose of this two-tiered program (Basic Teacher Training and Advanced Teacher Training) is to ensure that the art of teaching Classical Five-Element Acupuncture follows the principles of the oral tradition and endures in its purest classical form.
From 1988 to 1996 we created and taught at The Worsley Institute of Classical Acupuncture (WICA), an undergraduate program in the USA. It was during this time that Worsley Inc, a privately owned company that acts (serves) as the holder and protector of the Worsley Classical Five-Element Acupuncture Intellectual Property Trust, was created.
In the midst of our many professional commitments, J.R. and I married, moved from a suburban to a rural life and cultivated our new and cherished life in the country.
The Master Apprentice Program(MAP™) for ongoing postgraduate work, was created in 1996 and entrusted to me to continue after his death in 2003. It fulfils his wish that the knowledge, philosophy and healing of Classical Five-Element Acupuncture be passed on to as many people as possible.
The first group of MAP participants created the Worsley Institute of Classical Five-Element Acupuncture, incorporated in Virginia June 3, 1999 as an independent not-for-profit educational organization. Please visit worsleyinstitute.org to view the many wonderful services and products available.
In 1998 J.R. publicly announced that I would take the role of ‘Master’, should he pre-decease me. In his final years he intensified his work with me, grooming and counselling me for the responsibility that would follow. He encouraged me – as he did all his students – to be authentic and model that it was possible for every one of us to live a life of freedom by humbly committing to what he and his teachers called ‘The God Within’.
One of my designated responsibilities is to endorse practitioners and organizations who are in a current professional relationship with me, and who demonstrate that they practice and/or teach Classical Five-Element Acupuncture both in content and spirit as taught by Professor J.R. Worsley.
The Worsley Inc endorsements maintain the clarity and purity of this system of medicine.
